My guess....if Rufe is short for Rufus, it would sound like roof

Probably, it's that or it sounds like roofy. lol

All I know is that Rufe was the Allied code word for it...they used male names for fighters and female names for bombers and transports. Everyone called the Zeke a Zero anyway, the one exception.

I hadn't noticed the gender assignment but yeah, not that you mention it.. Betty was a bomber (known to the Japanese as the cigar because of the shape, Jill was a torpedo bomber, Lily, Nell, Helen...etc etc..
