One can interpret it that way, sure. Most of the philosophy behind the male energetic when referring to Fu dogs is that it protects governmental buildings and domination of the people through governance. However, I like your version much better. ;)

It also seems like it represents symbolically the triumph of the spiritual over the physical...as in mind over matter. Enlightened beings seem to have that ability.
